Author's Description:

People either love them or hate them — pierced earrings made with very thick, decorative posts and rings. Getting the holes in your lobes large enough to insert the thicker jewelry is sometimes called gauging, but others simply refer to it as stretching. No matter what you call it, you’ll need to stretch the holes in your ear lobes gradually, because enlarging them too quickly is painful, and can permanently injure your skin. Use a gauge chart to compare jewelry thickness and to target how large you want your ear lobes to (eventually) go.
